The location of where you build this shelter will be one of the most important things. You do not want to be in an area where you will be exposed and easily spotted. The chances that you may encounter more unknown situations are higher because you are not in an established place most likely.

This is why having protection will be one of the most important things you will need to have. I would say firearms would be your best bet followed by bows, swords, and spears. You need to make sure you know how to use them or there is no point in having them period. If you can’t use it when you need to then your weapon will be nothing more than a paperweight.
I would make sure to have a lot of extra ammo and arrows. You should always have at least one backup weapon. Think of what would happen if your gun malfunctioned when your life depended on it. It would be a great thing to have a bow to fall back on for example. Whatever the backup weapon is make sure you have one and you know how to use it. Just like your primary one!
The risk of traveling alone, have someone with you.
The world that you would be living in would be so foreign to anything you have ever experienced. So moving around will present dangers that will either lead to you doing well or to your death. This is the question you must ask yourself in this situation. If moving around in a nomadic way is the right thing for your particular situation. Even having one other person with you increases your chances of survival incredibly, because having two sets of eyes is better than one. You want someone who will watch your back and help carry heavier things.

There are pros and cons to surviving with more than one person if you have to be nomadic but I personally would say having more people would be more of an asset than a liability.
If you go the staying in one place type of survival you would do best to have more than one person go out with you when scouting and finding resources. It is always better to have someone with you than to go it alone.
You must plan for your home, to be compromised and have an alternative location
If something happened to your home you need a plan. This will put you on better footing than if something happened and you had no direction of where to go. This is very important to have in place. Think of if you were in a group for example and got separated for some reason. Or maybe you were lost in the wilderness without any help, you have to plan for the unexpected. So you can pivot and move forward with confidence.
It would be great if you already have an alternate location such as another home or compound, then great! You can go there at once and stay safe. If not, then look around at all the possible places where people may be crowding around, especially in populated areas. It may be a good thing to find people depending on what has happened, or it could be the worst scenario to find people. If you have no alternative place to go and you want to avoid people, then a good place would be going into a wilderness area.

There are countless stories of people who have found hope and made their own destiny instead of waiting for someone else to save them or give them a new home.
