The Materials You Need To Build A Fallout Shelter
Most people don’t realize how important it is to have a nuclear blast shelter in their home. With the current state of the world, it is more important than ever to be prepared for anything. There are many materials that can be used to build a nuclear blast shelter, but concrete is by far the most effective. I personally have helped a good friend of mine build his own bunker from scratch. This is what we did to building an underground bunker. It was not difficult by any means and we used the following things:
- Cinder blocks
- Concrete Mixer
- Gravel
- Cement
- Excavator
Those were the only things that we used to build the shelter. We did not hire this out, and put in some sweat equity. We used the excavator to dig out a large enough hole that was a square in shape. Then we poured the foundation one wheel barrow at a time. Is it easier to hire a truck to pour concrete for you? Yes. We wanted to make sure that this truly would only be known by family and close friends. We finished with the foundation which was a simple slab foundation we let it dry.
Once it dried we started laying out our cinder blocks and made sure everything was level. We then started to build the walls. The walls were two cinder blocks in width. We could have just a one cinder block in width wall but we wanted the extra peace of mind and strength.
This took as longer than expected because of the thickness of the walls. There was rebar that was put down each of the cinder blocks. Once that was accomplished we then bought another concrete mixer. We got a few hands on board and filled the cinder blocks with concrete throughout.
The roof of the structure was done by building a form with plywood. It did not go on top of the cinder blocks but was on the inner side of the walls. Then we put together wooden railing to create a mold.
After all of that we bought three jack posts to strengthen our form. Once all that was accomplished we put in rebar within the form where the concrete would go. Then we filled the form with concrete. This then created a strong concrete roof.
Through out the build, we made sure to drill holes and PVC piping to make sure airflow can come in. The most important thing beyond anything else would, getting an air filtration unit for the bunker. In the future my friend plans on putting in a septic tank next to it and plumbing for a more long term bunker situation. We installed a steel door to finish it off.
One great benefit of building a shelter/bunker like this would be how cold it is. It is always a very comfortable temperature inside in comparison to the outside.
